Young Artists win prizes for green artwork

Young artists have been celebrated for their impressive creative talents.

A total of 48 winners in the Council’s annual Britain in Bloom children’s art competition have picked up certificates and prizes from Borough  Mayor Barry Panter at a special awards ceremony at Keele Hall.

The theme of this year’s competition – organised as part of the borough’s Newcastle in Bloom campaign – was “Go Bloomin’ Green” to encourage children to think about sustainability and how small changes can make a huge difference to the environment.

There were 659 entries from 12 primary, secondary and special educational needs schools in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The overall winner of the under 10s category is Leo Peel, aged six from Baldwins Gate Primary School, who impressed judges with his depiction of the effects of plastic on our marine life, created using recycled materials.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Nina Huang, from St. Giles’ and St. George’s Academy in Newcastle, won the over 10s section with her dual representation of a world where we care and one where we don’t.

A special prize was presented to Merryfields School for submitting the most winning entries.

Artwork created by all of the winners is currently on temporary display in a shop window at Lancaster Building in Newcastle town centre, opposite Boots.

Beverley Sutton, Community Officer, said: “We invited youngsters to think about sustainability and the environment and how our actions affect the planet. They came up with some amazing examples of how small changes can make a big impact such as – recycling, water conservation, planting pollinators and encouraging wildlife.

“The standard of work was outstanding. Well done to everyone who took part and special congratulations to the winners, especially Leo and Nina who produced great interpretations of the theme and really made us think. We all had a lovely time at Keele Hall.”

Newcastle-under-Lyme is competing in the BID category of Heart of England in Bloom for the first time this summer – in a campaign led by Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District with support from Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council – after an unrivalled performance in the small city category for more than 30 years.

The art competition was sponsored by The Art Studio in Newcastle, the New Vic Theatre and Alton Towers.
