Photography Exhibition at University’s Henrion Gallery
A photography exhibition – which is part of the Stoke-on-Trent Centenary Living Heritage Festival – is taking place at the Henrion Gallery of the University of Staffordshire campus.
The exhibition by photographer Sam Ivin – who has been supported by B.ARTS – has updated the 2019 exhibition Settling, which was a project which documented the fascinating stories and images of people moving to Stoke-on-Trent from around the world.
The exhibition has been updated as part of Stoke-on-Trent’s centenary celebrations with some new portraits and stories added.
Stories include the life journey of World War Two veteran Walerian Tyminski, 16 year old Santiago Gutierrez Rey’s experience of moving to the city at age 7 with a determination to embrace opportunities and Aida Haughton’s story of finding love in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as going on to be nominated for an MBE for her work spreading awareness of the Srebrenica genocide and combating hate speech.

Photographer Sam Ivin said: “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to revisit Settling and create a few more portraits. I hope audiences enjoy looking at people’s pictures and learning about their fascinating stories as much as I have.
“The communities that exist here are very special.”
B. ARTS Creative Producer Rebecca Frankenberg said: “Settling is an incredible exhibition. Stoke-On-Trent’s heritage as a city is richly diverse, it’s fantastic to have an exhibition that shares some of these stories as part of the centenary celebrations.”
Originally a small project commissioned by Appetite and Grain in 2017, Sam went on to apply for an Arts Council bid to expand the project into the creation of a full exhibition in 2019, before being invited to update and re show the exhibition as part of a programme of events for a Centenary Living Heritage Festival in 2025.
In 2019 Settling was supported by GRAIN Projects, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Appetite and Arts Council England and was first exhibited at Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Hanley from May to September 2019.
The exhibition will be at the Henrion Gallery, University of Staffordshire, College Road, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 2DE
