New Vic’s revamped auditorium open to audiences

New-Vic-darkness-october-2020

The New Vic has re-opened for performances with Ghostlight, the first part of its season of socially-distanced productions for autumn.

Ghostlight, the first piece to be showcased in the theatre’s newly refurbished auditorium, is a short, evocative light and sound installation, which runs until Saturday 31 October. Featuring a soundscape of actors animating lines from favourite New Vic shows, alongside a beautiful lighting arrangement that will reveal the theatre’s new look to audiences in dynamic fashion, Ghostlight is a celebration of the ‘ghosts’ of shows past and an anticipation of shows in the future.

Free to attend, the ten-minute production offers audiences the opportunity to return to performances at their own pace. Running throughout the day between 10.30am until 3.00pm audiences are invited to visit the theatre, sign up for a slot to see Ghostlight with one of our Front of House team, and then enjoy the show. The theatre’s café will also be open, offering refreshments should visitors wish to enjoy a hot drink and a treat before or after they’ve seen the experience.

Ghostlight will also be the first chance for audiences to see the results of the theatre’s major auditorium refurbishment project, which took place across the summer.

New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins said: “It’s so exciting to be inviting audiences back to the New Vic for performances for the first time since March, when lockdown began. The ghost light is a theatre tradition that sees a light being left on the stage when theatres are dark to signify that performances will return. The idea captured my imagination and I hope the experience we have created will capture audiences’ imaginations too. We wanted to celebrate the ‘ghosts’ of shows past and also invite viewers to anticipate the shows we will stage in the future. This experience also offered us the chance to reveal the results of our incredible refurbishment project, which has been carried out over the summer. We’re so looking forward to welcoming audiences back to the theatre.”

Ghostlight runs until Saturday 31 October 2020 (excluding Sundays & Mondays) from 10.30am to 3.00pm and is free to attend. Customers can sign up for a performance slot when they visit the café (no advanced bookings).

Tickets for the rest of the New Vic’s autumn Housewarming Season are on sale now. To book visit www.newvictheatre.org.uk or call the Box Office on 01782 717962.
