Potters ‘Arf Entries Open for 2024

Runners and walkers can now sign up for this year’s Hanley Economic Potters ’Arf Marathon.

The eagerly anticipated iconic half marathon is back on Sunday, September 29, 2024, when the city will once again play host to the celebrated event, which promises an inclusive atmosphere and challenges to suit participants across a wide range of abilities and ages.

Potters-Arf-2022

The traditional 13.1-mile race is the centrepiece of the day, inviting seasoned runners to confront and conquer the challenging ‘Heartbreak Hill’. This formidable section of the course has become a rite of passage for many in the running community and beckons those who are eager to test their limits.

Understanding that not everyone is up for the full distance in a single go, there is also an option to walk, or team up with friends, family or colleagues for a walking relay. Teams of four can split the journey, turning it into a social event that still accomplishes the course but at a more leisurely pace.

Businesses and groups looking for an engaging team-building activity are encouraged to participate in the half marathon relay with two to four members per team.

Councillor Jane Ashworth, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “The Potters ‘Arf marathon is something I know the people of Stoke-on-Trent look forward to every year, it is one of the most unique, community-spirited races in the UK. The event is aimed at people of all abilities and I’d encourage people to register and start training for now.

“For those that fancy taking on the challenge, we have a fantastic offer of join now pay nothing till March currently in place at our council leisure centres to help you kick start your training regime. Visit https://activestoke.co.uk/ to find out more.”

David Lownds, Head of Products and Marketing at Hanley Economic Building Society said: “We are once again delighted to be the headline sponsor of this iconic local sporting event. Supporting our local community is one of our key priorities. Runners and walkers raise thousands of pounds for local good causes, and we are proud to be able to support the event.”

Graham Smith, Race Organiser at HS Sports said: “We are thrilled to be bringing back our city’s beloved half marathon, it’s essential for us that people of all backgrounds feel welcomed at our events and find an appropriate challenge that matches their fitness level or interest. The Potters ‘Arf Marathon is an opportunity for us to bring the Potteries community together, participants can look forward to a day filled with vibrant activities, from the heart-pounding main event – the half marathon – to fun runs that cater to enthusiastic junior runners.

“Whether you’re an avid runner or a supportive spectator, there’s an experience tailored for everyone.  The day will be a celebration of community spirit and healthy living that will see the Potteries come alive with excitement and entertainment for all ages.”

Junior runners aged 5-11 will also have the opportunity to dash through the 1km course right in the heart of the city centre. For those aged 12-16, a longer 2km course is available.

Ben Mills, Chief Executive Officer at BeeActive said: “Bee Active is proud to support the junior race at the Potters Arf Marathon, a special community event where children have the exciting opportunity to experience the thrill of participating in an organised race. We believe in promoting healthy, active lifestyles from a young age, and the Junior Race serves as an excellent platform to enthuse children about the joy of staying active and embracing physical activity as part of their lives.”
