Biker training to help keep riders safe
Bikers from across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are being encouraged to sign up for a training session to help keep them safe on the county’s roads.
The BikeSense Rider Development Scheme has been organised by the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership who are responsible for road safety in the county.
Motorcyclists holding a Full UK Licence will receive a full day’s training with experienced BikeSense instructors on a 2:1 basis, giving riders plenty of opportunity to get the most out of their session. Each session is tailored to the individual rider, and ideal for those feeling a little out of practice after a break.
Bikers will learn how to improve their riding skills, competence, and road safety awareness, covering topics such as road handling and positioning, hazard perception and defensive riding.
The scheme has been running successfully since 2006.
Speaking on behalf of the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said: “We continue to have some of the safest roads in the country, which is something we’re proud of and something the partnership has worked hard to achieve. These training sessions have really paid off in the past, helping us reduce the number of collisions involving bikers. It’s initiatives like this, alongside our Ride it Right routes, Biker Breakfast and Young Biker BBQ events that are all helping keep our roads even safer. The sessions are ideal for both experienced and newly qualified bikers and we have a ladies only session planned too. I would definitely urge people looking to improve their riding skills to get in touch and get themselves booked in.”
There are currently eight dates available at weekends in Burton, Cannock and Stoke-on-Trent, including a Ladies Only Day as detailed below:
Sunday 6th June – Burton Fire Station
Sunday 20th June – Sandyford Fire Station (Stoke-on-Trent)
Sunday 11th July – Cannock Fire Station
Sunday 18th July (Ladies and L 125cc riders only) – Sandyford Fire Station (Stoke-on-Trent)
Sunday 1st August – Burton Fire Station
Sunday 8th August – Sandyford Fire Station, (Stoke-on-Trent)
Sunday 29th August – Cannock Fire Station
Sunday 12th September – Burton Fire Station
The price for each session on these set dates is £50, however bikers can book an ad hoc session for £75, or if there’s two riders they can pay £50 each and do the ad hoc session together.
