The annual event – on Saturday 29 June – is an opportunity to honour the service of currently serving troops as well as reservists, veterans, cadets and their families.

Among the many attractions are a display of vintage military vehicles and equipment, educational stalls and live music from Sassy Grey and the Songbirds and Cadie Knight.

Food and refreshments can be purchased from popular market regular Sans Funky Kitchen and there will also be a general market as usual.

The family-friendly event, mainly based in the market and Ironmarket areas, officially starts at 10.45am with a civic procession from Castle House followed by a short service at the cenotaph in Red Lion Square.

Michelle Hopper, Mobile Multi-Functional Manager, said: “Armed Forces Day is a chance to remember the sacrifice and service of the entire British Armed Forces community, including residents in the borough, who have and continue to show extraordinary bravery in keeping us safe. The annual event in Newcastle has become really popular in recent years,
especially with families, as there is lots to see and do. I hope people come out in force to show their support and appreciation.”

Musical performances – featuring some wartime favourites – takes place at the market cross, by the Guildhall, from 12.30pm.

A commemorative Armed Forces Day flag will be flown in Queen’s Gardens from Friday.
