A Stoke-on-Trent allotment holder has entered the Guinness Book of Records after growing a 1432mm long leek – now officially the world’s longest.

Derek Hulme, who has an allotment plot at Buxton Street allotments in Sneyd Green entered his 143.2 cm long leek in the CANNA UK National Giant Vegetable Championships, held at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire on 22 September 2022.

Derek said: “Back in 2019 I and a few other giant veg growers were given a packet of 30 Bulgarian long leek seed in an attempt to grow the first ever world record for the world’s longest leek.

“Due to the coronavirus pandemic, I was unable to take my leeks along to any shows but this year I entered the Malvern, CANNA UK National Giant Vegetable Championships and have finally officially won the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest leek.”

Cllr Carl Edwards, cabinet member for housing and environment said: “I’d like to congratulate Derek for officially being a world record holder. Our allotments have always been popular and are a key part of our Green Space Strategy in the city and we have maintained funding and support for allotments and investment in services.”

Stoke-on-Trent City Council proudly boasts 80 allotment sites, with approximately 3082 plots with a waiting list for plot sites of over 5 plus years in some areas.

Allotments have become especially popular over the last few years due to the limitless benefits they offer, including, for those who do not have access to a garden at home, they can grow their own produce, family activities helping to educate where food comes from and getting all generations involved, healthy eating, remaining activity and a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.
