Voting open for 2021 Design Awards in the Borough

Queens-gardens-NUL

Residents – and other interested parties – can help to shine the spotlight on their favourite building projects and landscape schemes in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Online nominations are being accepted for the Council’s 2021 Design Awards – a biennial event which aims to celebrate the major roles that good building design and land development play in enhancing the borough.

Three individual categories are available: New buildings – residential and commercial – completed between January 2019 and March 2021
Conservation/refurbishment of existing buildings – residential and commercial – finished between January 2019 and March 2021

Landscaping and development of land from January 2016 and March 2021

The judging panel – involving council officers, councillors and architects – are looking for examples of quality workmanship and will also take into account good sustainable practice, appropriateness for surroundings, suitability for purpose and general impact. Submissions should include as much information as possible.

Votes can be submitted at www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/designawards until 1 November.

Councillor Paul Northcott, Cabinet member for strategic planning, said: “The Design Awards is all about the Council continuing to work with the local community to promote the value and importance of places and high quality design in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

“Since 2009, when the initiative started in partnership with Newcastle-under-Lyme Civic Society which has since disbanded, there have been lots of fantastic developments in the borough and we’ve celebrated some worthy winners. That pace hasn’t slowed down so we’re once again expecting a variety of nominations. There are no restrictions on who can vote – everyone is encouraged to take part.”

An awards ceremony is being organised to take place in the coming months. The most recent schemes
to win their categories, or receive commendations, include the Belong Village and Heritage Centre, Castle House and Queen’s Gardens in Newcastle, Basford Villas, Camp Hill near Baldwins Gate and Caudwell International Children’s Centre based at Keele Science & Innovation Park.
