National recognition for parks and green spaces in NUL

queens-gardens-newcastle-under-lyme

Several Newcastle-under-Lyme parks and green spaces have been recognised as some of the best in the country.

Six venues in Newcastle-under-Lyme are among 2,000 sites that have received prestigious Green Flag status. The international scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, celebrates well-managed spaces that boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent visitor facilities.

Bathpool Park, in Kidsgrove, Bradwell Crematorium, Keele Cemetery and Newcastle’s Brampton Park, Lyme Valley Parkway and Queen’s Gardens have all maintained their quality ratings following unannounced “mystery shopper” visits during the summer by experienced judges.

All of the parks and green spaces are maintained by the Borough Council.

Councillor Trevor Johnson, Cabinet member for environment and recycling, said: “Receiving the prestigious Green Flag award for a number of our recreational outdoor spaces is always a source of pride for us but it’s particularly rewarding this year after even more residents have seen and appreciated the value of having welcoming, safe and well maintained green spaces on their doorstep. We’re delighted to be recognised for continuing to provide a very high standard of facilities for residents and visitors. This wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated council staff and community groups who put a great deal of effort into looking after these lovely areas.”

Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE added: “This year, more than ever, our parks and green spaces have been a lifeline and we know that millions of people have used them to relax, meet friends, exercise or simply escape for a short time. It is testament to the incredible dedication and hard work of parks staff and volunteers that, despite the challenges that went along with record numbers of visitors, the Borough Council has achieved the highest international standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
