VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT TO HELP CREATE A ‘PEOPLE’S PARADE’ OF THE FUTURE

Volunteers are being sought to take part in a special celebration which will mark the City’s centenary year.

On Saturday 7 June around 1,000 performers – including artists, musicians and dancers – will walk through Hanley for the People’s Parade, which is being delivered by Stoke-on-Trent City Council in partnership with Stoke Creates and Arts Council England.

The parade, will start at the College Road area of Hanley Park before heading up into Hanley, through the Cultural Quarter and finishing back in Hanley Park – all part of the huge celebrations to mark the 100 Centenary for Stoke-on-Trent.

Various volunteer roles are available including walking with the parade, assisting with participants registrations, manning reception points and much more. Training will be provided with the first session taking place on Saturday 31 May.

Susan Clarke, Executive Director of Stoke Creates, said: “The People’s Parade is a love letter to the city, inviting the people who make up this great city to take to the streets and celebrate all its wonderful characteristics; creativity, fun, resilience and innovation.

“We are now seeking volunteers who would like to help us on the day and be part of what is to be a huge celebration.”

The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Councillor Lyn Sharpe said: “The People’s Parade is getting bigger and better every week. As soon as the date was announced last year it went straight in my calendar and I’ve been counting down the days ever since.

“There are opportunities for everyone across all the communities in our fabulous city to get involved and be part of something special that will go down in Stoke-on-Trent’s history. Our streets will be lit up with colour and creativity for a parade like we’ve never seen before. It’s going to feature costumes, giant puppets and music and the best bit is we want you to be part of it. “

Peter Knott, Midlands Area Director at Arts Council England, said: “It is great that we are able to support Stoke-on-Trent’s Centenary celebrations using money from the National Lottery.

“The People’s Parade will bring local people together to celebrate the city’s rich cultural heritage and inspire the next generation of talent in the region. Cultural events such as this one, bring communities together and make our lives richer. This is a shining example of how creativity and culture in the community can help to make people feel happy, connected to each other and proud of the place that they live in.”

Opportunities to volunteer for the People’s Parade can be found here or email so****@**************rg.uk

The People’s Parade forms part of SOT100 – a year of activity to mark the centenary of Stoke-on-Trent being awarded official city status that will shine a light on the heritage and cultural identity of the city and area, affectionately known as The Potteries.
