ArtSlam NUL set for the Summer

LOCAL artists are being challenged to take part in a visual art takeover at the former York Place Shopping centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme, bringing the town together before Capital&Centric begin its radical transformation.

Set up by Appetite, Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District (BID) and ArtsKeele and ArtSlam NUL is a dynamic live public event where locals will be invited to witness art in the making, vote for their favourite creators, and enjoy a party atmosphere with live DJ sets, bar and unforgettable performances.

ArtSlam is set to take place on Friday 27 June from 7pm at the newly dubbed Astley Place, the location for a new neighbourhood of homes, shops, and improved community hang out spots.

In collaboration with Capital&Centric and supported by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, ArtSlam NUL will feature three dynamic rounds of live competition, Visual 2D Art, Ceramics and Spoken Word where artists will go head to head, creating a masterpiece in just 40 minutes, with the audience deciding the winner in each category, culminating in one overall ArtSlam Champion.

All artwork created on the night will be auctioned off, with proceeds split between the artists and local charity North Staffs Mind, which supports people with their mental health.

Heather Dowler Appetite General Manager, said: “Watch a host of artists produce original work in front of your eyes! That’s what ArtSlam promises to deliver, alongside tracks by a DJ and a sprinkling of surprises this is an event with party vibes not to be missed. And with 50% of ticket sales going to the North Staffs Mind, you can have a good time for a good cause at the same time.

“A number of partners have come together to bring this event to Newcastle, following on from it’s success at the Goods Yard in 2021. We can’t wait to see what Newcastle thinks of it.”

Charlotte Pearce, Newcastle-under-Lyme BID Manager, added: “Helping to deliver events like ArtSlam reflect the positive changes happening across the town, such as this transformative project from Capital&Centric.

“It’s been fantastic to work with Appetite on this project – they’ve been passionately reimagining and revitalising empty spaces across Newcastle for years, using art to spark connection and conversation.

“Supporting North Staffs Mind adds another important layer to this event, shining a light on the importance of mental health and ensuring that while we celebrate creativity, we’re also supporting the wellbeing of our community.”

Tom Wilmot, managing director at Capital&Centric, said: “Celebrating local art and culture is a key driver in helping cultivate thriving neighbourhoods in towns and cities up and down the country, and none more so than in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

“ArtSlam is a great initiative to not only give local artists and creators a platform to show what they can do but also raise funds for a cause that’s close to our hearts and that could make a real difference to people’s lives.”

“Our work to give Newcastle town centre a new lease of life is more than just building bricks and mortar; it’s about creating inclusive spaces that the whole community can enjoy and host events like this that brings people together.”

The team behind ArtSlam are calling on local and regional artists working in visual 2D, ceramics, or spoken word to apply to take part in this one-of-a-kind live competition. This is a paid opportunity to showcase your skills in front of a live audience and be part of a unique night of culture and creativity.

Artists interested in participating should email as***@**********rg.uk with their contact details, examples of their work (such as images, videos, or links), a short paragraph or voice note explaining why they’d love to be part of ArtSlam, and a brief description of their artistic practice and experience to date.
