VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR UNIQUE STOKE PROJECT

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to take part in a new project which is set to create a unique temporary clay structure for Stoke Town Centre.

The British Ceramics Biennial (BCB) is working with Tuckey Design Studio, and BA Architectural students from University of Staffordshire, on ‘Playscape’ project and are inviting members of the public to join them.

For those who come forward this will be an opportunity to learn about the ancient and environmentally sustainable building method known as rammed earth. Simply put, a mixture of clay earth is compressed into large wooden moulds to ‘cast’ walls.

International rammed earth construction specialist, Sami Akkach, has also been brought in to work on the project.

Associate Artists at BCB, Sarah Fraser, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity to be involved in a project, which is not only going to celebrate Stoke Town and its heritage, but also to showcase how rammed earth has so many benefits. As well as being a sustainable building method, it is also a very versatile process of building and perhaps something which not many will know about.

“We are very much looking forward to getting started and it would be great if local residents were to join us.”

Anyone who volunteers for Playscape will be required to support the project Monday to Friday between 14 – 25 April, and between 9am and 4:30pm.

Sarah adds: “Ideally we would be looking for a minimum commitment of around 25 hours each in total, but we are also open to applications for those who cannot commit to this. We will also be providing refreshments and appreciate the support.”

To apply to become a volunteer for the project please email: sarah@britishceramicsbiennial.com with your availability. Applications close Monday 7 April.

BCB were awarded some funding for this project from the Stoke High Street Accelerator pilot as part of the £500,000 Greenspace Funding awarded to Stoke-on-Trent City Council to enable Accelerator partnerships to deliver projects to improve green spaces and parklets around Stoke Town Centres high street. So far 14 projects have been awarded funding.
