Libraries go green for May

Visitors to Staffordshire’s libraries during May can expect a host of fun activities to promote sustainability and help protect the environment.

Green Libraries Week starting on 1st May is an annual celebration of the best that libraries have to offer and the extraordinary things they do to support their communities.

This year’s theme is Green Partnerships and includes exhibitions, author talks, craft workshops and recycling projects.  Visitors to their local library will also get the chance to pick up a seeded bookmark, which they can plant in their gardens, take a photo and share on social media using #GreenLibrariesMonth

Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities at Staffordshire County Council said: “Green Libraries Month is always a great opportunity to promote our libraries whilst highlighting the importance of protecting our environment.

“After last year’s successful Green Libraries Month, it’s fantastic to see even more activities running this year. So whether it’s storytelling, creative workshops or exhibitions, there’s something for all the family.

“We continue to develop our libraries service and it’s great that more and more people are choosing to join and visit their local library.  If you’re not already a member of Staffordshire libraries, then I’m sure you’ll be amazed at all the new resources, activities, groups and services available.”

At Cheadle Library throughout May, and at the Museum of Cannock Chase, Staffordshire Archives and Heritage team will be hosting a series of mini exhibitions. Both Rugeley & Shenstone Libraries, along with the mobile library service, will be piloting the use of biodegradable library cards, whilst at Leek library, children can attend a green themed poetry session.

Families in Stafford are also invited to green themed story-time and puppet workshops at Stafford Library on the 24 May. In Burton, staff are getting ready to display some great green themed reads and in Tamworth adults can attend a Recycled Craft Workshop.

Green Libraries Month is in partnership with Staffordshire Community Learning, who are offering taster sessions including crafty upcycling, mini-bug hotels, cress caterpillars, kitchen composters and saving money by growing your own veg.  Further details on taster sessions are available at Staffordshire Community Learning – Staffordshire Adult and Community Learning

Further information on library events is available at Staffordshire Connects.
